Openings of 3 films-Prom night

I have now completed the 3 entire film analysis which has helped me realise the key codes and conventions of most horror films:
I have now done an analysis of my 3 films to see if there was any Key Generic Codes and Conventions used throughout the film which were similar through out the horror films. The films i analyzed where all  15 horror which is more relevant for my audience profile and product
The 3 films i chose were
Jeepers Creepers
Prom Night
The Ring
Key Generic Codes and Conventions used throughout the film are:

·        Dark/low key lighting when the villain is present or hiding to show he is present

·        Trapped setting where the villain would hide and small locked places to keep his victims from running to create a sense of thrilling ness because there no escape

·        Props used such as a knife, blood, mobile, drink and gun are all iconic images that help identify this horror genre.

·        Villain wears black or very dark clothing and hides his face which hides is identify which makes it chilling because you don’t know who the killer is until the end which as suspense

·        The non-diegetic sound at the beginning is played when the villain is present which is very high pitch and soft violins which adds a sense of eerie to that character. Hearing the creepy non-diegetic sound when the villain is present, helps the audience identify him aswell as knowing he’s coming

The Narrative Structure

The narrative structure is very non-lineal because it shows flashback’s of her past which helps shows the depth of the film story line. It helps let the audience understand about the character more. The narrative structure is separated to follow a pattern which helps tell the equilibrium.

Equilibrium- 3 years ago Donna returned home to find her brother and father dead, Disruption- her former teacher killed her mother in front of her, Realization- the murder gets caught and put behind bars,

Equilibrium- she’s now living with her aunt and is getting ready to attend their senior prom, Disruption- they learn that Fenton has escaped from prison and warns Donna's aunt and uncle that he’s after Donna. Equilibrium- Donna is at prom with all her friends unaware of this, Disruption- The killer kills all her friends in the hotel rooms, Realization- police catch the killer and Donna escapes but all her friends are dead

The disruptions within the narrative are:

  • Her former teacher killed her mother in front of her
  • They learn that Fenton has escaped from prison and warns Donna's aunt and uncle that he’s after Donna.
  • The killer kills all her friends in the hotel rooms

The disruptions through out the film are when the villain is present and when he has killed someone. This is quite common in a typical horror film
